Kelvin Gastelum will face Israel Adesanya for the interim UFC middleweight championship at UFC 236 in April, Dana White told ESPN on Tuesday.
Gastelum (15-3) was scheduled to challenge UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (20-4) for the title at UFC 234 this month but Whittaker was removed just hours before the show because he had to undergo emergency hernia surgery. As previously reported, Whittaker has been released from a Melbourne hospital and isn’t expected to fight next until sometime between June and August. In addition to an internal hernia, Whittaker also suffered a collapsed bowel. His activity level will be limited for the next four to six weeks.
Adesanya (16-0) fought Anderson Silva at UFC 234 and won by unanimous decision. He’s undefeated and has won five fights in the UFC in just 12 months.
UFC 236 will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at a venue and location still to be announced.
