The 2019 WWE Hall of Fame class will be headlined by D-Generation X, the promotion and ESPN confirmed on Monday.
The six members that will be inducted will include X-Pac, Billy Gunn, Road Dogg, Chyna, Triple H and Shawn Michaels. The inductions will incorporate both key versions of the faction that played an integral role during the company’s Attitude Era, a time that propelled them past rival World Championship Wrestling.
“I think it’s the most meaningful for us all to go in together and to be recognized together,” Paul “Triple H” Levesque told ESPN. “Because I think both groups were [just] as impactful.”
The group was something they were working on before Scott Hall and Kevin Nash left the then World Wrestling Federation for WCW.
“It’s a funny thing, because DX was something that, before Kevin [Nash] and Scott [Hall] left, at the time we all talked about using ‘The Kliq’ as it was — kind of morphing that into television, since it was so out there anyways,” said Levesque. “But things worked out the way they did — they left, and the timing was right.
“Shawn and I still wanted to do it. Vince saw the value in it, I guess, and finally let us go at it,” Levesque continued. “By that point in time I was looking for a heater, and we had brought Chyna.”
After Shawn Michaels left WWE following Wrestlemania 14 due to chronic back injuries, Triple H brought in X-Pac, the former 1-2-3 Kid in WWE, who went to WCW as part of the nWo as Syxx. Upon X-Pac’s return to WWE, he and Triple H along with Chyna helped The New Age Outlaws win the WWE Tag Team Championship.
“By then, Shawn had had injuries, and when Shawn stepped away for a bit to deal with his injuries, the timing was perfect. Kid [X-Pac]’s contract was up at WCW, he wanted to come back. The New Age Outlaws had gotten hot, and the combination of the group could just mean more than the individuals –and it took off again.”
There have been variations of DX since with the most recent being just a tag team comprised of Shawn Michaels and Triple H. Michaels recently came out of retirement to team with Triple H to face Kane and The Undertaker in a tag team match at 2018 WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. The DX tag team won the match.
Chyna will be inducted posthumously as she died in 2016 due to an overdose.
